I. BEST BOOK YOU READ IN 2014?
I don’t know, man I’m really torn between Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater and Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. I’m choosing both.
II. BOOK YOU WERE EXCITED ABOUT AND THOUGHT YOU’D LOVE BUT DIDN’T?
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. I downright loathed the main characters and the plot just made me so smad (sad + mad).
III. MOST SURPRISING (IN A GOOD OR BAD WAY) BOOK YOU READ IN 2014?
Life by Committee by Corey Ann Haydu. I thought it’ll be same-old, same-old but it explores so many themes from cheating to bullying and secrets. I only have good things to say about this one.
IV. BOOK YOU ‘PUSHED’ THE MOST PEOPLE TO READ (AND THEY DID) IN 2014?
It’s a tie among Vicious by V. E. Schwab, The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I feel victorious.
V. BEST SERIES YOU STARTED IN 2014? BEST SEQUEL OF 2014? BEST SERIES ENDER OF 2014?
Best series I started this year is definitely Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff because it’s so damn good.
Best sequel has to be Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor because so dark (and Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater and Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas).
Best series ender is Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo because so much awesome.
VI. FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR YOU DISCOVERED IN 2014?
Jay Kristoff because Stormdancer made my heart weep.
VII. BEST BOOK FROM A GENRE YOU DON’T TYPICALLY READ/WAS OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE?
Out of the three comic books I managed to read this year, I loved The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1, The Faust Act by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie so hard.
VIII. MOST ACTION-PACKED/THRILLING/UNPUTDOWNABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR?
World After by Susan Ee. I finished it in a day so hell yeah, it was all of the above.

World After by Susan Ee, Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas and Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater (these two books, man).
X. FAVORITE COVER OF A BOOK YOU READ IN 2014?
I love the cover of Since You’ve Been Gone because it’s so summery and the fonts are fabulous. The cover of The Half Life of Molly Pierce is just so artsy which I love. I still don’t know who that is on the cover of Blue Lily, Lily Blue but I love it so hard anyway.

XI. MOST MEMORABLE CHARACTER OF 2014?
The heir of ash and fire who would fucking bow to no one AKA Celaena Sardothien.
XII. MOST BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN BOOK YOU READ IN 2014?
The Half Life of Molly Pierce by Katrina Leno. Dude, that book has words so fucking amazing.
XIII. MOST THOUGHT-PROVOKING/LIFE-CHANGING BOOK OF 2014?
Falling into Place by Amy Zhang. The book will make you tear up because it’s about life and cuts really, really deep.
XIV. BOOK YOU CAN’T BELIEVE YOU WAITED UNTIL 2014 TO FINALLY READ?
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline because I always thought it wouldn’t live up to my love for sci-fi but it did and yes.

Well, I don’t think you have to guess the answer to this. Still, The Assassin’s Blade and Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas and Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater.
XXI. BEST BOOK YOU READ IN 2014 THAT YOU READ BASED SOLELY ON A RECOMMENDATION FROM SOMEBODY ELSE?
Asti, Aditi and Fahima pushed Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff on me until I read (and abso-fucking-lutely loved) it.
XXII. NEW FICTIONAL CRUSH FROM A BOOK YOU READ IN 2014?
STURMHOND. He be so witty and heart-breaking.

Falling into Place by Amy Zhang and The Half Life of Molly Pierce by Katrina Leno.

XXIV. MOST WORLD-BUILDING/MOST VIVID SETTING YOU READ THIS YEAR?
The world of Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas is so vast and breathtaking. I don’t know how she does it. Also, the world of Penryn & End of Days series by Susan Ee is pretty vivid and gruesome and I love it.
XXV. BOOK THAT PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE/WAS THE MOST FUN TO READ?
Just One Night by Gayle Forman. I didn’t even know I needed the feels until I read it.
XXVI. BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY OR NEARLY CRY IN 2014?
That would be a lot (I guess binge-reading series will do that to you). Falling into Place by Amy Zhang, Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff.
XXVII. HIDDEN GEM OF THE YEAR?
More people need to read Life by Committee by Corey Ann Haydu.

XXVIII. BOOK THAT CRUSHED YOUR SOUL?
Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas and to think that Maas says book 4 is the darkest so far. WHAT.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz which made me realize that I need to include more LGBT books to my to-read list.

Talker 25 by Joshua McCune. Such an infuriating book whyyy.

I’ve discovered so many it’s hard to choose! So I’m not going to.
II. FAVORITE REVIEW THAT YOU WROTE IN 2014?
My review of Vicious by V. E. Schwab which I read in 2013 and am still not over how good the book is.
III. BEST DISCUSSION/NON-REVIEW YOU HAD ON YOUR BLOG?
Most popular discussion was about absent mothers and the female bildungsroman followed by YA adventures in parts (which is basically a discussion about duologies and trilogies).
IV. BEST EVENT THAT YOU PARTICIPATED IN?
I loved taking part in bout of books both times this year; it’s always such a fun event!
V. BEST MOMENT OF BOOKISH/BLOGGING LIFE IN 2014?
I rediscovered instagram and went from full-time instagrammer and part-time bookstagrammer to part-time instagrammer and full-time bookstagrammer. That was hard to type.

VI. MOST POPULAR POST THIS YEAR ON YOUR BLOG?
An electronic playlist. I love me some music. Most popular bookish post was about discovering the tag and browse features of Edelweiss.

Book photography on Instagram! I love it and I love looking at book photos.

Well, I was supposed to read 80 books this year and I’m close to finishing my 70th book. I call that success.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh which is a somewhat retelling One Thousand and One Arabian Nights.

I hate that I’ve become so lazy when it comes to writing reviews so I want to change that and I want write more posts instead of just letting the ideas rot in Google Keep.
VI. A 2015 RELEASE YOU’VE ALREADY READ AND RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE? 
I read a 150-page preview of A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab which is as awesome as the title suggests. Also, I’m currently reading Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge and I think it’s a great book!

I was tagged to do the TBR tag by Jess. Created by Dana, the TBR tag is a fun way of embarrassing yourself when it comes to tackling the never-ending TBR. Lucky for us book lovers, nothing embarrasses us for long.

How do you keep track of your TBR?

I use a range of stuff that starts with my bookshelf, continues on with my Goodreads to-read and to-read-so-bad-it-hurts shelves and ends with my Kindle and Kobo libraries. It’s a pretty complicated process where there are instances like uh-I-didn’t-know-I-owned-this-book and oh-I-own-THIS-book.

Is your TBR mostly print or eBooks?

Most of them are eBooks as I’ve been reading books in their electronic formats more and more. I buy print editions for books I know I will love but sometimes I just can’t wait and buy them as eBooks (see: Vicious by V. E. Schwab). I mostly just buy eBooks because it’s easier for me to maintain my library that way and the one shelf I have in my room is mostly full despite being so big.

How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

Whatever suits my mood. I try to stay on top of latest releases but as a mood reader, it’s pretty much out of the question. I’ve tried (and failed).

A book that has been on your TBR the longest?

Goodreads tells me that it’s Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and my brain tells me a list of books that starts with Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi and then just goes on and on and on.

A book you recently added to your TBR? 

Vicarious by Paula Stokes. I’m always up for YA sci-fi and this one has a Korean stunt girl as the main character who’s searching the real and the virtual world for her sister. The only sad part is that it comes out in March of 2016. Uh…

A book in your TBR because of its beautiful cover?

Volume 1 of The Fade Out by Ed Brubaker which I’m so stoked for because I recently rediscovered comics and I’m never going back. Also, artsy vintage covers are the best. Can I has it now instead of January 27th, 2015?

A book in your TBR that you never plan on reading?

I wish I could’ve said Twilight by Stephanie Meyer but that’s not happening ha. I’m least interested in reading Insurgent by Veronica Roth. I loved Divergent but all the meh reviews of Insurgent and then the fact that I got spoiled for Allegiant… Let’s just say that I don’t want touch the series at all right now. I just might in the future. Maybe.

An unpublished book in your TBR that you’re excited for?

I’ve tons of unpublished books in my TBR going as far as 2017. Yes, I’m serious about my reading life. Apart from the obvious book four, five and six from Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maass and the finale of The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, I can’t wait to read The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh.

A book in your TBR that everyone recommends to you?

Graceling by Kristin Cashore which I planned on reading this year but haven’t gotten around to it. However, I plan to binge-read the trilogy next year.

Number of books in my TBR?

No idea, really. I guess the number is more than six hundred? It keeps changing because I mainly keep track of it on my Goodreads and I tend to cull every few months. I hardly ever keep track of my print TBR except when I’m buying books he he.

Monthly Recap: November

November is over. Much wow because 2015 is so close.

LIST OF NEWSWORTHY

This month was mainly about two things: lack of functional internet and my best friend’s wedding.
A and I on her wedding. // Somewhere in the state of Punjab. // Shoe shopping from Lark and Finch!

Internet Blues
I planned and brainstormed so much for sci-fi month but I couldn’t actually sit down and write any posts because the internet was having connectivity issues. I got it fixed around mid November but now it’s not working properly and just ugh. Kill me now. However, I’m getting a new broadband connection in a few days so hopefully there won’t be anymore issues.

Sci-Fi Month Updates
Despite failing in my plan to blog and to reread Marissa Meyer’s Cinder and then moving on Scarlet and Cress, I did manage to sci-fi out some. I read a comic after ages and abso-freaking-lutely loved it! I also watched the first three X-Men movies and a few episodes of Doctor Who.

A’s Wedding
My best friend’s wedding was supposed to be in December but she calls me casually during early November and is like I’m getting married in a week or two. We texted back and forth and I’m all wonders like is she married yet or what. But then she was like yes, getting married on 23rd November so just come, okay. Thus, I planned a trip for five days since there were going to be three events and I wanted to spend time with her as she’s leaving for the US in the first week of December and it feels somewhat surreal because most days I just feel like a twelve year old with a best friend who’s a married woman. What.

TV WATCH

Basically, a month of playing catch up with TV shows.

I caught up on the first and started the second season of The Originals and it’s definitely so much better than the lame ass The Vampire Diaries (which I really need to stop watching because ugh storyline and Delena makes me barf).
I also started catching up on the fourth season of Suits and it’s definitely the weakest yet.
I started watching Selfie and it’s so-so. No surprise about it getting cancelled.
The Big Bang Theory, New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are pretty much awesome comedies.
Kind of relieved that Awkward and Faking It went on breaks and that Awkward’s next season is going to be the last one because it can get really annoying sometimes.
I watched more episodes of Doctor Who and it’s all kinds of awesome.
Revenge‘s current plot is annoying me and I need it to get better. Whiny Emily is no fun.
Arrow is going great and The Flash is super great because of how much different it is from Arrow.
Finally, I started watching Daria from the beginning because I never did that and I want Daria’s sarcasm in my life.

MOVIE WATCH

Sci-fi-ing it out.

X-Men (6/10) – My expectations were sky high and while I liked pretty much all the action-filled scenes, I wasn’t blown away by it.
X2 (6/10) – X2 walked down a similar path in its execution as its predecessor and delivered.
X-Men: The Last Stand (5/10) – My least favorite up till now, the third installation left me feeling a little underwhelmed.
Maleficent (7/10) – There were some things that I loved and others that were okay. Overall, a good watch.

APP WATCH

Ever since I got my first ever smartphone in June, my life have also been all about apps. So I decided to add this category since I keep installing new apps and getting rid of the ones I get tired of/find no use of anymore.


Two Dots – I hardly ever play games on my phone but when I do, I wait for them to be released on Android like you don’t even know. I’m on Level 58 right now so, yes pretty addictive.
Sleep Bot – Jessica mentioned this app in her blogpost about health and exercise related apps and I have to say that I’m digging this one.
Smash Hit – This one’s mainly premium but I’m willing to buy it because hot damn those graphics and smashing things is basically fun and an anger reducer.

2015 YA Sci-Fi to Look Forward to

It’s always fun to see what sci-fi trends are popular in a certain year. In 2013, it was mainly about time travel with popular releases like Cristin Terrill’s All Our Yesterdays, Kasie West’s Pivot Point, and Lauren Miller’s Parallel and a comeback of dystopia with Rick Yancey’s The 5th Wave, and Alexandra Bracken’s continuation of The Darkest Minds series with Never Fade and Amy Tintera’s Reboot.

In 2014, YA sci-fi releases had varying degrees of success, some were hyped too much others not at all and most involved a group working towards a common goal. Duology starters like Mindee Arnett’s Avalon and Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam’s Elusion failed to impress many readers while, Sophie Jordan’s Uninvited fast-paced story kept us hooked and Melissa Landers’ Alienated slowly build up to its finale. Others like Marissa Meyer’s Cress, Erika O’Rourke’s Dissonance and Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner’s This Shattered World have been included in the highly anticipated lists of many.

What does 2015 have in store for all of us? I compiled a list of top sci-fi to look out for next year.


Sci-Fi Series Starters

Series starters are roughly mentioned according to their release dates. I just hope the ones without any don’t get pushed back to 2016 because hello, awesome book blurbs!

Seeker by Arwen Elys Dayton – More fantasy than sci-fi, Seeker has already been optioned by Columbia Pictures. Seeker follows a female assassin who travels the globe from Scotland to Hong Kong. I expect great things.
A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab – This is much more of sci-fi fantasy with magic, parallel worlds and time travel and a protagonist named Kell who’s a smuggler. Hello, new series with a treacherous main character, I think I’m going to love you seeing as the 150-page preview blew my mind.

Dove Arising by Karen Bao -Initially, this book had an awesome cover and I wanted to read it mainly because of that. Sadly, they changed it

The Cage by Megan Shepard – A half dozen teenagers trapped in a human zoo which is controlled by an otherworldly race known as Kindred.

The Leveller by Julia Durango – Fall into a brand new series about Nixy whose job is to be a bounty-hunter with a twist. Dragging kids from virtual reality back into real life should be easy enough but not when the game’s billionaire developer’s son, Wyn, goes missing.

After the Red Rain by Barry Lyga, Rob DeFranco and Peter Facinelli – This is probably going to be a series and from the intel I’ve gathered, it’s supposed to be a huge dystopian hit. I get Barry Lyga but co-authoring are a director and Carlisle from Twilight? Do I want to read this? From what we do know about After the Red Rain, it’s that the protagonist is a boy name Rose who lives in a world that’s environmentally collapsing and discovers he has inhuman powers. Pretty standard dystopia however, I will admit that anything with environmental in it gets me every time.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – There’s so much hype regarding Illuminae and for once, I think it’s well-deserved because have you read These Broken Stars and Stormdancer? Illuminae follows a hacker and her ex-boyfriend on a fleet who team up to uncover the the truth behind the plague ravaging it.

The Outliers by Kimberly McCreight – Already optioned by Lionsgate, The Outliers includes a psychological weapon called EQ Transference and the group which calls itself the Outliers and is set in a utopian world.

Passenger by Alexadra Bracken – The news about Bracken’s new series came at the right time as her highly acclaimed The Darkest Minds series came to an end this year. Passenger follows a modern teen’s accidental discovery of her ability to time-travel and involves a treasure hunt. Fun times ahead.

Futuristic Stand Alones

Everyone likes a standalone now and then and good stand alones are getting increasingly hard to find. Hopefully that won’t be the case next year.

The Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick – Spanning from seventeenth century to 1920s and ending in a spaceship voyage to another another world, The Ghosts of Heaven promises a lot of things. The fact that there aren’t many historical sci-fi in the young adult genre makes it all that more enticing to look forward to.
The Glass Arrow by Kristen Simmons – A sci-fi dystopia which I thought was going to be a series but apparently it’s not? The Glass Arrow takes place in a world where women are auctioned off to the highest bidder and must run to survive.
The Memory Key by Liana Lu – Lora Mint lost her mother five years ago and now she’d have lost her memories due to the Vergets disease, a viral form of Alzheimer’s, if not for the memory key. But when her it goes haywire, Lora remembers a moment that puts everything into question. Lu’s debut aims to question the significance and consequences attached with out ever-increasing need for technology.

Duplicity by N. K. Traver – Duplicity has hacking plastered all over it. It’s a digital hell for Brandon when his reflection starts moving with a mind of its own. Now that’s scary and exciting as hell!

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley – Despite being primarily fantasy, Magonia has sci-fi elements as it takes place in a land of trading ships. With a gorgeous cover and a promising story, Magonia is set to enchant its readers.
5 to 1 by Holly Badger – Another futuristic The Handmaiden’s Tale-esque story where the ratio of girls to boys is 5 to 1. In a twist, the women decide to institute a series of tests for the boys to win wives instead of marrying them of to the highest bidders. Girl power, yo.

Illusionarium by Heather Dixon – Illusionarium follows an apprentice scientist who’s desperate to save his family. There are parallel worlds and humor and who doesn’t want to read a book like this.
Tracked by Jenny Martin – Tracked introduces rally racing in the world of science fiction. But really, what more do you really need when there are fast cars involved? The cover could’ve been better, though.

Armada by Ernest Cline – If you haven’t read Ready Player One yet, now’s the time to do it. The highly anticipated sophomore novel is releasing four years after Cline’s groundbreaking debut. Armada introduces us to Zack Lightman who discovers that the videogame he is so obsessed with is real and that Earth needs his help to defend itself from a possible alien invasion. I want.

The Good Ol’ Sequels

I thought about not including this category but hello, it just means that we all get to get excited about these all over again heee. Here goes.

Fairest and Winter by Marissa Meyer – The fact that there will be two Marissa Meyer books releasing next year makes it worth the wait. First we get Queen Levana’s story in January which sets the scene for Winter releasing in November 2015. Excite, much? Hell. Yes.

Firefight by Brandon Sanderson – The sequel to Steelheart got pushed back to January 2015 from its initial release date of November 20th, 2014. The good news is that the early reviews suggest it’s a classic Sanderson awesomeness.

Hello There, Sci-Fi

Take out your light sabers ’cause it’s that time of the year again. Last year, the month long event was hosted by Rinn and this year it’s being co-hosted by her and Oh, the Books!

Like last year, I wouldn’t be posting as much as I’ve yet to write the posts despite having written all my ideas down. I’m not a hardcore sci-fi reader or sci-fi anything, to be honest. Yet I do enjoy the genre thoroughly and some of my favorite movies are sci-fi like Inception, Avatar, The Adjustment Bureau, and Megamind. When it comes to books, I only recently read Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One before which I’ve only read YA sci-fi and Dan Brown books. I guess I got too distracted by YA fantasy to read much of anything? Oops. But sci-fi fantasy counts so it’s all good.

My plans for celebration of sci-fi aren’t as ambitious as they were last year because I always fail. Darn it.

Sci-Fi on a Screen

For all my love for the genre, there are some essential sci-fi movies I haven’t yet watched but really want to. I’m planning to watch all the X-Men movies and whoa, there are a lot of them (meaning that I might not watch all seven of them).

And oh, I’d be continuing watching Doctor Who.

Sci-Fi in Graphics

It’s my goal this year to read at least one manga and I think I’ll go for sci-fi fantasy graphic novels. I was a huge Archie Comics reader and then I just drifted into the world of books without any illustrations.

The Wicked + The Divine Volume 1 by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie – This I really want to read because it’s totally calling to me.
Saga Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples – Everyone raves about this graphic novel series and now I’m curious.

Sci-Fi to Read

There are some YA titles that I’ve been saving up to read in November which is basically Marissa Meyer’s The Lunar Chronicles. I’d be rereading Cinder because I really want to and Fairest releases in January so it also helps with that.
