Review: Wicked Games by Sean Olin

June 11, 2014 by Sana

ABOUT THE BOOK

Wicked Games by Sean Olin
young adult contemporary thriller published by Katherine Tegen Books on 10 June 2014

To all the locals in the small beach town of Dream Point, Carter and Lilah seem like the perfect It Couple-but their relationship is about to brutally unravel before everyone’s eyes.
Carter has always been a good guy, and while Lilah has a troubled past, she’s been a loyal girlfriend for the last four years. When smart, sexy Jules enters the picture at a senior-year bash, Carter succumbs to temptation. And when Lilah catches wind of his betrayal, she decides that Jules needs to pay.
By the end of the summer, the line between right and wrong will be blurred beyond recognition. Blood will be shed. Nothing in Dream Point will ever be the same.
This juicy summer read will keep readers turning pages until the shocking, nail-biting finale.

THE RATING

THE REVIEW

Wicked Games is one big cliché of a book. First off, it misled me into thinking it’s going to be steamy hot. It wasn’t. I also thought it was going to be nail-biting except we all know what happens to psychos ninety percent of the time, I worked past that because I thought it was going to be shocking. It ended with a twist alright, but then the epilogue killed it. Lastly, there were some cringe-worthy moments where Lilah does some really ugly stuff. However, it also made me roll my eyes because Carter couldn’t handle Lilah and Jules was so scared and paranoid that it was plain annoying.

There’s obviously something wrong with Lilah because she goes into periods of intense depression where she hurts herself. It has severely affected her current, as well as future, life. In her various failed attempts to hold on to Carter, she actually manages to push him away further. And oh, she’s got the I’m-going-to-keep-following-you-to-the-edge-of-the-world-until-you-realize-how-much-you-need-slash-love-me routine perfected to a tee.

However, the cheating aspect is downright stupid and wrought with oh-please-don’t-give-me-those-lame-excuses-about-how-Jules’s-so-beautiful-but-Lilah-but-oh-well-fuck-it. The thing where he doesn’t want to leave Lilah because he’s afraid of what she’ll do to herself is nullified in that moment, because you really do not have the integrity Jules think you do. So you know your girlfriend is disturbed and I get that you’re too annoyed at her to care, but going skinny dipping with an almost stranger is bound to end up the way it did. And then there’s Jules who’s had this big crush on Carter since their freshman year which is supposed to justify his sudden interest in her? Just… no.

Lilah’s instability is obviously a plot device in the book which I feel wasn’t handled all that well. She was smarter than Carter and Jules combined despite her mental insecurities and is probably the best character in the book. She’s just fixated on being with Carter no matter what and that’s much more admirable than Jules daydreaming about how Carter is such a gentleman. Aw shucks.

I don’t have anything against characters that are hard to like because of the things they do and that is never something that makes me hate a book. Why I had such a problem with Wicked Games is because how stupid Carter and Jules act. Carter has been in a four year relationship with Lilah and one night he just ups and stop caring about her despite knowing she’s going through series stuff? That is not okay. Then he tries to help her on his own which is idiotic at best. On the other hand, Jules is made to seem like she’s sexy, smart and artsy but in reality she’s just not that much of a nice-girl victim she’s seems to be.

In short, Wicked Games is one big no-no and that’s just sad. I’m just happy that it was a quick read because I wanted it all to be over. I also actually couldn’t stop reading it because I was intrigued. Then I figured out what was about to happen and it went down from there. I guess if I didn’t have so many expectations from it, I’d have enjoyed it more but then I’m not so sure. Oh well.

THE QUOTES

‘You can only be you. No matter how much you might want to be the person they think you should be, you can’t change who you are. It’s up to them to accept you.’

‘She felt like her life and everything it had ever contained were crashing down and burying her alive.’

Top Ten Tuesday: Best Books of 2014 (So Far)

June 10, 2014 by Sana

A weekly feature by The Broke and the Bookish
I keep meaning to do top ten posts but I only ever remember them on an actual Tuesday. Not this week though ’cause Lindsey tweeted about it and I was immediately on board. Also, I like to flail about good books so there’s that as well.
I read this series back in April and I’m still reeling from all the awesome. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is unlike any other book because Karou is so artsy and Brimstone has such a personality and the settings are out-of-this-world good. And that’s not even the half of it. Days of Blood and Starlight raised the bar so high I wasn’t sure anything could top that. It also broke my heart. Dreams of Gods and Monsters is my favorite from the series because of all the things that happen and the stressful undertone because man, how does it all end?! Also, I just have to mention Night of Cake and Puppets because Zuzana and Mic forever.
This was pretty much the first book I read in 2014 and OMFG, so good. This recommendation comes at a perfect time because Ruin and Rising, the last book, comes out in a week. My body is ready.
Scarlet is such a rollercoaster ride of emotions that go bam, bam- BAM. My poor heart almost couldn’t take it. I love books that wreck so this one is definitely recommended. Hehe.
Holy moly! This book did not disappoint and yes, you all need to read it.
This book. I have no words that are comprehensible because I think I’m still in bit of a book hangover ever since I read it in May. Still, I’ll tell you why you need to read it: beautiful friendship, loads of playlists, and Frank FREAKIN’ Porter.
This was my first LGBT book ever and I’m so glad that it was my first. So raw and beautiful and feels-y and that’s all I can really say about it because then it’ll be all asdfghjkl.

But what were those three words? I need to know because come on, it’s just pure torture. Still, I love those two and their story. Sigh.

Ask Again Later is such a happy book that I had a smile plastered to my face the whole time I was reading it. Also, the story is bloody brilliant despite being such a fun read.

What a messy, mindfuck of a book. If you know me, you know I love such books. Awkwardness and secrets are part of life which is why their portrayal in Life by Committee is so raw. Can I have Star’s book now?

I love road trip books and Open Road Summer had it and so much more. Though I was frustrated at the main character’s sudden bitchiness, this book made it to top ten because of the beautiful friendship, music and romance that just makes you go like, ‘Now kiss!’

I also just have to mention Gayle Forman’s Just One Year and Kasie West’s Pivot Point because they’re so good and I only didn’t mention them because they’re both duologies.

Have you read any of my best reads so far? Do you need me to convince you more?

Monthly Recap: May

May 31, 2014 by Sana

May was a bit lazy for me especially in terms of reading. Hoping June would be better in terms of reading.

LIST OF NEWSWORTHY

Bout of Books x 3
Due to my self-induced book hangover after finishing Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, I couldn’t focus on a single book. So when Bout of Books 10.0 rolled around, I had to take part because I had managed to finish one book almost two weeks in to May. I’m so glad I took the plunge ’cause not only my reading choices turned out to be amazing, I managed to reach my goal of reading four books.

Bedroom Choices
I finally took out the rest of my books from the closet! My sister put them there when I left for college back in 2009. But now they’re on my bedroom floor ’cause lack of a bookshelf will do that to you. And then cleaning closets is not an easy feat. Now I’m trying to figure out how to repaint a table for my creative needs so there’s that as well.

TV WATCH

I watched TV pretty sporadically but I’m caught up on most of them so that’s good.

Revenge was amazing. Way to turn the tables!
What in the world, The Vampire Diaries?! I’m happy, though? Ha ha.
Reign‘s finale was okay and New Girl‘s finale kinda sucked.
I finished my binge-watch of Arrow (which was amazing) and The Carrie Diaries (which was bittersweet).
Awkward and Faking It are going fine, I guess.
Orphan Black is going awesome. I’d really recommend that you watch it f you aren’t already.

MOVIE WATCH

Transformers (7/10) – I love Bumblebee and Optimus Prime is the autobot. Still these don’t have much on Pacific Rim’s jaegers.
Her (8/10) – Subtle, thought-provoking and beautiful. I think everybody should watch this movie.
Toy Story 2 (7/10) – I liked it but not more than Toy Story. Now I’m bracing myself for Toy Story 3.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (9/10) – A beautiful, beautiful movie. Ben Stiller is an amazing director.
Walk of Shame (6/10) – I liked it more than I was expecting to.
The Internship (5/10) – I pretty much just watched it for Dylan O’Brien. The movie was meh, he wasn’t.

CAHLBC

ABOUT THE BOOK

Life by Committee by Corey Ann Haydu
young adult realistic contemporary published by Katherine Tegen Books on May 13th, 2014

Some secrets are too good to keep.

Tabitha might be the only girl in the history of the world who actually gets less popular when she gets hot. But her so-called friends say she’s changed, and they’ve dropped her flat.

Now Tab has no one to tell about the best and worst thing that has ever happened to her: Joe, who spills his most intimate secrets to her in their nightly online chats. Joe, whose touch is so electric, it makes Tab wonder if she could survive an actual kiss. Joe, who has Tabitha brimming with the restless energy of falling in love. Joe, who is someone else’s boyfriend.

Just when Tab is afraid she’ll burst from keeping the secret of Joe inside, she finds Life by Committee. The rules of LBC are simple: tell a secret, receive an assignment. Complete the assignment to keep your secret safe.

Tab likes it that the assignments push her to her limits, empowering her to live boldly and go further than she’d ever go on her own.

But in the name of truth and bravery, how far is too far to go?

Bout of Books 10.0

May 11, 2014 by Sana

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01 am Monday, May 12th and runs through Sunday, May 18th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 10.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I thought I wouldn’t be able to take part in this Bout of Books because of various reasons but I suddenly wanted to. I’ve managed to finish only one book in May and could certainly use the motivation to finish books instead of just starting them. This would be my third Bout of Books and I’m more than ready for it to begin.

GOALS

My main goal is to read at least four books from the ones below. I just started Corey Ann Haydu’s Life by Committee today and I hope I can finish it today, too but we never know, right?

I also plan to comment on blogs, complete a couple of challenges, and tweet about my progress.

VERDICT

Total number of pages: 1107
Books read: 3

So I managed to read more than a thousand pages in a week! That feels like a big accomplishment! I failed my challenge of reading four books since I’m not even a quarter into my fourth read. Still, I loved all of it, though. The chats were awesome and the books I read were awesome. Do you know why it isn’t called Awesome Bout of Books? ‘Cause the awesome is implied.

Are you taking part in it? Let’s get our reading on together!
